Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?:
Far less than most people expect. This is because of two things:
Does acupuncture work?
Google your current ailment and the words "acupuncture" and "clinical trial". Yes.
How does acupuncture work?
There are a few theories on how acupuncture works. The most versatile explanation seems to be that as the body is needled, the brain and nervous system treats it as a threat and triggers healing and immunological response that's net effect is far greater than what is needed for the needle itself. These factors plus the increased blood flow that is stimulated work to nourish areas to eliminate dysfunction.
Additionally, different acupuncture points on the body influence seemingly unrelated areas or organs on the body. This is harder to explain, but appears to be related to how the brain neurologically organises the body and what areas of the body originally differentiate from common cell groups in vitro.

Far less than most people expect. This is because of two things:
- Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, smaller than a syringe (which is most people's experience with needles), and unlike a regular injection, it is not hollow, and as no fluid needs to be passed through it.
- Most pain sensing nerves are on the skin layer, so when the needle is gently but swiftly tapped through this level, a small pinch may be felt, but often nothing at all. Afterwards, the needle is guided to the active acupuncture point. When this is stimulated, a sensation usually described as a tingling/electrical current, or dull radiating sensation similar to getting a massage on a tight muscle is felt. This should be noticeable but not uncomfortable.
